ROBERT CRAY -- With all due respect to Cray's obvious talents (tasteful guitar playing, soulful voice, etc.), the guy's just a little too smooth and accomplished for his own good. He occupies a nebulous middle ground between staid classic rock (i.e. Eric Clapton at his dullest) and polite yuppie blues. It's tragic really -- so much talent, yet so little to really show for it. Tabernacle (Robertson)

CREED, TANTRIC -- See Creed in Record Reviews, p. 86. Potential heirs to Creed's overbearing, groove-less hard rock crown, Tantric open. Philips Arena (Sarig)

JAMES MATHUS & HIS KNOCKDOWN SOCIETY -- Slightly less crunchy than the North Mississippi Allstars but just as frantic, Squirrel Nut Zipper guitarist Mathus drags the blues through the Mississippi swamps and dives into the muddy end. This is the sort of nasty, edgy Fat Possum-style music typically found in backwoods juke joints. Rocking, raw, primitive and scary, like the blues is supposed to be. Those expecting snappy Zippers' tunes better stay home. Smith's Olde Bar (Horowitz)
