Funkenstein 2008, Halloween Ball and more

October 31 Friday

Don't let another Halloween pass you by without spending some of it surrounded by the undead. Join local hip-hop artists Collective Efforts as they pair with local dub/reggae outfit Sun Toucher for FUNKENSTEIN 2008, this year's zombie-infested mix of syncopated rhythms, static single-chord vamps and heavy bass lines. Additional brains, er, music provided by Captain Mudfish. $10. 8 p.m. Smith's Olde Bar, 1578 Piedmont Ave. 404-875-1522. (Sean Dettman)

October 31 Friday

The identity of the SPOOKS' lineup has long remained secret, and its connection to the Black Lips is unclear. The group appears dressed as ghosts and dives headfirst into the depths of haunted garage-rock fuzz and rattling chains. This show doubles as their debut LP release party, as well as the after-party for Deerhunter's record release show at Variety Playhouse. The Cola Freaks from Denmark perform at 11:30 p.m. Mourdella and Coffin Bound open. $5. 9 p.m. Star Bar, 437 Moreland Ave. 404-681-9018. (Chad Radford)

October 31 Friday

The Krewe of the Grateful Gluttons and Eyedrum come together for a HALLOWEEN BALL of grand proportions. Featuring giant skeletal puppets and a "mystical menagerie," this celebration is sure to attract Grant Parkers and all other locals willing to dress up. Anticipate savory gumbo from Six Feet Under, music from Jeff Hix & the Heretics, and yes, a costume contest – so pull out all the stops. $10. 8 p.m.-2 a.m. Eyedrum Art & Music Gallery, 290 Martin Luther King Drive, Suite 8. (Caroline Burke)
