CRACKED ACTOR, ALASTOR -- Cracked Actor is a silly but strangely enjoyable dance/cabaret act from Florida that features two flamboyant frontmen and two halter-top-clad female backup singers performing to prerecorded dance tracks. Perfect for shaking that groove thang after a long winter's nap. See Alastor in Earshot, p. 79. Smith's Olde Bar (Smith)

NILLAH, ATOMSPLIT, ANNARAY -- Perpetually perky popsters populate The Earl tonight. Nillah, that infectious trio led by Elisabeth Eickhoff, offers songs from its propulsive platter The Power of Pop. Atomsplit, with Shuteye Records poobah Pete Knapp on bass, pummels the peeps following a set by Athens' Annaray, with former Daisy drummer Lamar Flowers. Pedaling in the perimeter of the Pixies and Pavement, Annaray is a self-described "big rock cake topped with pop sprinkles." The Earl (Smith)

ITZHAK PERLMAN -- Violinist Itzhak Perlman performs in two romances by Beethoven before taking to the podium to conduct Beethoven's Symphony No. 8 and Brahms' Symphony No. 3. Symphony Hall (Brown)

DORIA ROBERTS, BLAKE GUTHRIE -- Not just another folkie, Doria Roberts brings a distinctly streetwise sass to her refreshingly original material, with tunes that champion both personal and political independence. She's recording this show for an upcoming live CD. Also graced with a startling new maturity is witty strummer Blake Guthrie, whose latest work reflects newfound inner strength without forsaking the biting humor on which his songwriting reputation was built. Eddie's Attic (Nicoll)

SPYRO GYRA -- For well over a quarter-century, Spyro Gyra has been the most commercially successful fusion outfit to spring up in the wake of Miles Davis' pioneering rock/jazz workouts of the late '60s and early '70s. After all these years, they are nothing if not consummate professionals who know their way around their instruments. Personal enjoyment will depend largely on your love/tolerance/disdain for the genre referred to in polite company as "smooth jazz." Variety Playhouse (Robertson)
