A big, cunning twist can turn movies such as The Usual Suspects and Memento into word-of-mouth sensations. Probably no play or film is so famous for its intricate reversals and surprises than Anthony Shaffer's SLEUTH, playing Tues., OCT. 23, and through Nov. 4 at the Alliance Theatre. Associate artistic director Kent Gash casts David de Vries (pictured) and Carl Cofield as a game-obsessed mystery writer and his wife's lover, respectively, who engage in cat-and-mouse games for increasingly high stakes. Reportedly the upcoming movie version with Michael Caine and Jude Law changes the script considerably, so this is a good chance to catch the original. $25-$35. Tues.-Fri., 8 p.m.; Sat., 2:30 and 8 p.m.; Sun., 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. Main Stage, Woodruff Arts Center, 1280 Peachtree St. 404-733-5000. www.alliancetheatre.org.
