The Joy Formidable, A Place to Bury Strangers, Exitmusic

When: Sat., March 24, 7:30 p.m. 2012

London-based trio the Joy Formidable comes stateside with in support of The Big Roar (Canvasback). Winding guitar-driven melodies, girly affectations, and in-the-red distortion tangle with vocalist/guitarist Ritzy Bryan's exuberant falsetto to create a shimmering, hook-filled tension. Such songs as "Whirring," "Austere," and "Cradle" give credence to the album's name, with a whiplash dirge that moves too quick to be dismissed as shoegaze fodder. But the music's fuzz and jangle is too lush to be called anything else.
