Steve Miller Band

Live From Chicago

It's impossible to tell from his commercial pop fare that Steve Miller was once a dedicated blues guy who played with and was influenced by Chicago legends such as Muddy Waters and Buddy Guy. His return to that city in 2007 for a weekend of crowd-pleasing performances was not only videotaped for this DVD/CD set, but a few fascinating documentaries show Miller touring his old Windy City haunts and reminiscing. He injects blues warhorses "Crossroads" and Otis Rush's "All Your Lovin'" into the hour-and-50-minute set, but not enough to distract from the hits that fly like a big ol' jet airliner over the concert. Miller's veteran band is well-rehearsed and a few unexpected twists – like adding a hip-hop section to a 15-minute version of "Fly Like an Eagle" – highlights the group's improvisational abilities. Somewhere Miller has a great blues show in him, but maybe he's saving that for the next DVD. 3 stars.

Steve Miller band plays Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre Mon., May 26.
