Spirits and the Melchizedek Children/Order of the Owl: "Look" b/w "Cocaine Super Demon"

The Great Big

The pairing of Spirits and the Melchizedek Children with Order of the Owl for this split 7-inch has been a highly anticipated local merger, and it's a harmonious collision to be sure. For Spirits' side, "Look" is a soft, spacious new number that finds the band communing with the stars via psych-folk crooning and blue grooves steeped in haunted reverb. On the flip side, Owls tighten up "Cocaine Super Demon," a monstrous dirge that's been floating around the Internet. Although the improvements are subtle, they sharpen the song's teeth and claws to tear through the sludge and distortion for a badass metal opus that's a vicious and hypnotic yin to Spirits' yang. Rarely are split singles as finely balanced as this. (4 out of 5 stars)

With Nigredo. $7. 9 p.m. Sat., Aug. 4. 529.
