TAMMY FOWLER -- A skillful and amusing solo female singer/songwriter, Tammy Fowler is folksy, funny, warm, accessible and (a rarity in this genre) refreshingly self-deprecating. Eddie's Attic (Nicoll)

MICHELLE MALONE -- Malone's forthcoming CD, Hello Out There, isn't coming out until May, but early-birders can snatch it at local shows like this one. Those familiar with her more bluesy rocking material may be surprised to here Hello's poppier side, including the bouncy "Super Ball." Alabama-based Wayne opens. Smith's Olde Bar (Sarig)

THE SHAZAM, KICKSTAND, MODELTONES -- Kickstand begin their month of Wednesdays at the Star Bar. Scene vet Ray Dafrico's rag-tag bunch of scrappers kick up some dust when they feel like it, and they should be in rowdy spirits tonight. Nashville's The Shazam are a Sweet and Cheap Trick-influenced power-pop combo that rock mightily. The Modeltones make no-frills pop/rock. Star Bar (Smith)

TOP-OF-THE-TREE SEMIFINALS -- Trances Arc, Eden and Tentilfour square off tonight for the chance to compete for 12 hours of recording time at Tree Sound Studio. CJ's Landing (Sarig)

JOHNNY YOUNG -- Former Mick Taylor sideman Young is a straight-ahead rocker fronting a tight power trio. This blind New York guitarist won an Emmy for composing the "Guiding Light" theme, but since has radically shifted gears from soaps to frothy, no-frills, blues-rock with Kiss and AC/DC-styled licks a-flyin'. Unapologetically loud, thumping, loud, in-your-face, fist-in-the-air -- did we mention loud? -- rock, the high-energy riff-driven, stomping power-trio comes alive in concert. Spine also performs. Dark Horse Tavern (Horowitz/Smith)
