TUE/OCTOBER 3

NOTED ACTS
DEKE DEAN'S ROCKABILLY OPEN MIC -- The Dean Machine can croon like nobody's business, but is there a new champion out there in the house? Let's see some other hair-hoppers hop up there and give it a try! C'mon, everybody! Northside Tavern (Nicoll)

K.G.B., ANGRY SALAD -- K.G.B. manage to infuse a bit of distinctive panache into the well-trodden punk/pop arena. Cobbling together a variety of influences (including '60s Brit-pop, ska and glam), the results are pleasantly diverting and listenable. On the other hand, Angry Salad prove once again that even the most generic alt-pop band can garner attention with a cheesy, '80s cover tune in their repertoire. That their reading of Nena's "99 Red Balloons" is the most memorable aspect of their act speaks for itself. Both bands are appearing as part of the Rock the Vote tour. Georgia State University (Robertson)

VANDERMARK FIVE -- Last time in town, Saxophonist Ken Vandermark and two other members of this group, bassist Kent Kessler and Trombonist Jeb Bishop, astounded their audience as part of the Peter Brotzmann Tentet + 2; it was easily the most inspiring show of the year. Now Vandermark is back to present one of his mainstay ensembles and certainly one of his best. First Existentialist Congregation (Khalid)
