Safety first

Officer Eli Cohen, Georgia State University Police

"Theft is the most common crime on just about every college campus. Almost every kid has a laptop, everyone has a cell phone and an iPod and a digital camera, so it's easy to leave that stuff out and walk away. Before you come to school, write down the serial numbers of your electronic devices so if they're ever lost or stolen they can be easily recovered. Every now and then we have kids who will fall asleep in our student center sleeping right next to their backpack and someone will pick it up and walk away. My advice would be to take your stuff with you and pack it up. We understand it's a hassle, but it's a bigger hassle to have to replace your things."
