The Big List

Rodriquez

When: Sat., May 11, 8:30 p.m. 2013

It's a good time for artists who've been languishing in obscurity. At least it looks that way from the outside. Rodríguez, the Mexican-American folk singer out of Detroit, born Sixto Díaz Rodríguez, released two albums in the early '70s and then faded away. He gained fame in South Africa, though, and his legend grew there — this is all chronicled in Searching for Sugar Man, the Oscar-winning documentary film released last year. Better live than on album — some of his releases suffer from some seriously overwrought early '70s production — Rodríguez is always genuinely enthused to be in front of a crowd (again). He’s been at work on some new songs recently, and this weekend's show at Variety Playhouse on Sat., May 11, should prove a peek into a story that's still being written.
