Metro, suburban groups unite to target Northern Arc

Inner-city groups and suburban not-in-my-back-yard activists forged a coalition Monday to defeat the delayed but not dead Northern Arc road project.

The coalition will bring together members of the Northern Arc Task Force, the Clark Atlanta Environmental Justice Resource Center, the Metropolitan Atlanta Transportation Equity Coalition, and the Georgia Conservancy.

The idea for the coalition was born a month ago at a Georgia Conservancy forum when panelists -- including Atlanta City Council President Cathy Woolard, state Sen. Vincent Fort, Cherokee County Commissioner and Atlanta Regional Commission board member Emily Lemke -- realized they had different reasons to oppose the Northern Arc, but a common goal: the road's defeat.

Fort, the Environmental Justice Resource Center and the Metropolitan Atlanta Transportation Equity Coalition are fighting the Northern Arc because the sprawl that's bound to occur along the road's 59-mile path will suck jobs and economic growth from inner-city communities.
