Joss Stone: Soul Sessions Vol. 2

The barefoot chanteuse's debut introduced us to a young, blue-eyed soulster with an appreciation for her elders. Having legends Bettye Wright and ?uestlove produce your foreword raises impossibly high expectations - expectations that have diminished over the years with each less impressive release since her Soul Sessions Vol. 1. Stone, along with producers Steve Greenberg and Steve Greenwell, tries to fill some very big shoes, and sometimes actually hits the mark. Such covers as "The Love We Had (Stays on My Mind)," "Pillow Talk," and "(For God's Sakes) Give More Power to the People" showcase the singer's breathy vibrato at its finest. Unfortunately, Stone's similar vocal approach to each song wears thin, proving promise is not always fulfilled. (2 out of 5 stars)
