For 18 years now, formerly Atlanta-based photographer Chris Verene has been documenting family members and residents of the dying Illinois town of Galesburg, where he was born. Like Harmony Korine's Gummo or Mitch Epstein's photographic reconnaissance of his Holyoke, Mass., hometown, Verene continues to capture the many sad stories circulating beneath the increasingly hard-to-achieve American dream in Galesburg: The New Chapters. Opening Sept. 16, the exhibition explores poverty, teen pregnancy, mental illness, child abuse and the hopelessness that has trickled down to the nation's youth. See Arts, p. 51. Free. Tues.-Sat., 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Through Oct. 22. Marcia Wood Gallery, 263 Walker St. 404-827-0030. www.marciawoodgallery.com.
