Restaurant Talk: The two-story building on Ponce de Leon Avenue that was once home to legendary burrito joint Tortillas finally is getting a tenant. It was rumored that the space was going to become a pool hall, but regional restaurant chain J. Christopher's will be moving in. With several OTP locations, the breakfast, brunch and lunch spot is also planning to open a restaurant in Decatur. ... One of the first businesses to open in gentrified East Atlanta, Heaping Bowl and Brew, closed its doors almost two weeks ago. Dish has learned that East Atlanta Thai & Sushi, located next to the now vacant spot, has plans to take over the space.
Retail Talk: Rumors have been floating around for months that the wildly popular clothing outpost H&M will open in the ATL. Dish was told by an employee in H&M's corporate office that the rumors likely are true -- but we won't be wearing the fall/winter line that Stella McCartney designed for the store. Though there are no immediate plans to open an H&M in Atlanta, according to a cryptic response from an H&M representative, the company is looking into opening here in 2007. The retail chain, known for cheap and trendy clothing and accessories for men and women, first opened in the United States in 2000 and currently operates 80 stores nationwide. ... L.A.-based American Apparel, best known for its line of basic cotton separates, will be opening not one (as Dish has already reported), but two stores in Atlanta. The Spring Street location, which originally was slated to open Oct. 8, is still scheduled to open sometime this fall. A second location, on Euclid Avenue in Little Five Points, will open at a yet-to-be-determined date.
