THE CLOSE, CHOCOLATE KISS -- Four bands fill the bill at the first in this series of summer shows focusing on local underground rock. The Close achieves an engaging sound with throaty lead vocals and creative guitar-and-bass interplay. Moodswing labelmates Chocolate Kiss deliver rock with raw lyrics minus the petty pretense. The Remurxers and Rizzudo round out the lineup. Echo Lounge (Bethea)

COOL FOR AUGUST, CHARLIE MARS BAND, NILLAH -- It is in fact, a bit Cool for August this year, but not as cool as this alternative band's tepid career. Yet, they plod onward, constantly reminding us of their former major label contract. The Charlie Mars Band travel in the tried-and-true basic rock direction with a little bit of Texas Americana thrown in. Nillah, the brightest light of this program, offer a fresh take on the standard Replacements-inspired pop formula. Smith's Olde Bar (Smith)

DRAGON*CON -- Celtic folk-rockers Emerald Rose (also performing Sept. 2) play an early afternoon set, followed by an acoustic performance from local synth-goth popsters Nothing Inside (also performing Sept.1-2) in the Hyatt Concourse. Texas' Ghoultown will kick off the evening with its blend of Old West twang and Misfits-inspired goth punk. All of which should grease up the stage perfectly for rockabilly co-headliners, Atlanta's Blacktop Rockets and Charlotte's Belmont Playboys. Hyatt Regency Atlanta (Williams)

FATBOY SLIM -- Norman "Fatboy Slim" Cook has come a long way, baby -- arriving in Atlanta for one of only a couple American DJ dates. See article. EarthLink Live (Ware)

ISLEY BROTHERS -- Carl Thomas opens. The show is in conjunction with the Montreux Atlanta Music Festival. See Isley Brothers in Record Reviews. Chastain Park Amphitheatre (Sarig)

MATCHBOX 20, TRAIN, SEVEN MARY THREE -- A textbook bill of faceless bands whose creativity barely extends beyond their photogenic lead singers' preening stage presence. See Seven Mary Three in Record Reviews. HiFi Buys Amphitheatre (Horowitz)

SEKS -- The Chamber welcomes back the U.K.'s Anthony and his progressive house anthems. Resident Gene Carbonell also spins, while SoCo Audio's Marcos Pieras keeps it chill in the Asylum. The Chamber (Ware)

6X, HELGAS, ATOMSPLIT -- Three servings of scorching, overdriven rock, garnished with colorful blasts of glittery pop. 6X might be mistaken for Joan Jett fronting Cheap Trick. The Helgas' silly metallic punk posturing ranks second only to Gargantua in this town. Opening act Atomsplit comes off like a more melodic version of the Buzzcocks. The Earl (Nicoll)

SMASHMOUTH -- MTV has created many a musical monster, Smashmouth being a prime example. The mostly happy-go-lucky SoCal foursome plays a free Labor Day show. Centennial Olympic Park (Bethea)

TRACKSIDE REUNION -- Long before he opened the Attic, local entrepreneur Eddie Owen cultivated his interest in the acoustic singer/songwriter format across the road at the Trackside Tavern. Tonight, he brings together some of the Trackside's most distinguished veterans -- including Catbird Seat, Kristen Hall, Ashley & Mark, David Franklin, Kristian Bush and Gerard McHugh -- for an evening of brown guitars and velvet memories. It all starts at 7 p.m., and the first two hours are all-ages. Eddie's Attic (Nicoll)

USED CARLOTTA, PARDNER -- Like a favorite uncle, Richmond's Used Carlotta walks with a lazy, charismatic swagger and speaks in a tired, loveable drawl. With its all-purpose, old-timey style, the group samples the traditions of bluegrass, country and folk without ever taking a full bite. Good driving music for that patchy country two-lane leading to the secret swimming hole. Local "kuntry" act Pardner is also on the bill (see listing for Sun., Sept. 2). Star Bar (Hutchinson)
