The third installment of Atlanta DJ/producer Floyd the Locsmif's Divine Dezignz series is a heady, mostly instrumental trip that comes together with a smooth and mysterious flow. Subtitled Dirty Canvas, the 15 cuts blend trip-hop, avant-garde jazz, turntablism and a constant vinyl crackle into a dense palette of abstract vibes laid beneath aural portraits. StaHHr, John Robinson and Ekundayo bust the format for a cerebral three-way titled "On My Gonzalez." J-Live lends his lyrical skills to "Talk About," and 4-IZE gets beasty on "The Alf Song." But Atlantan Dashill Smith's trumpet stabs and rhythms on "Filthy and Horny" conjure progressive signals that stay true to the album's form while ebbing into a more sophisticated headspace. The rest of the volume follows a classic mid- to late-'90s experimental flow (a la Mo' Wax), tied together by effortless, organic movements that are street savvy by nature and complex by design. (4 out of 5 stars)
