El-P: Cancer 4 Cure

Breaking out of a two-year hiatus, New York-bred producer/MC and former Def Jux mastermind El-P is back with both barrels blazing. Not only has he revitalized the career of Killer Mike by producing the sociopolitical, volatile R.A.P. Music, El-P's latest album, Cancer4Cure, smashes the 16-bar template. The voice of beat poet William S. Burroughs rings out in the nervy "Request Denied" declaring "storm the studio" and songs such as "The Full Retard" and "Drones Over BKLYN" lead the charge with razor-sharp production, well-oiled angst, and a head-nodding low-end beamed straight from the future. Not every song reaches the same level of innovation in the face of fractured, urban mystique as "Tougher Colder Killer" and "True Story," but there's not a bad song here. (5 out of 5 stars)
