Black Moth Super Rainbow: Cobra Juicy

Rad Cult

Black Moth Super Rainbow mastermind Tobacco (Tom Fec) doesn't throw any surprise punches on Cobra Juicy but he does create his most realized album yet. He still buries his voice under that mind-melting Vocoder - which has ostensibly set the tone of his catalog. Here, songs such as "Windshield Smasher" and "Like a Sundae" are melodic and buzzed-out but they offer more of the same trippy fodder. Other songs, such as "Hairspray Heart" and "Blurring My Day," tap into previously hidden enclaves of emotional breadth, reaching a high mark of compositional sophistication. But even though these new highs cast light on BMSR's musical limitations, they illustrate that there's still plenty of room for discovery inside the clearly defined aural domain that Fec has staked out. (4 out of 5 stars)
