Atlanta Streets Alive

Staff Pick

The only thing Atlantans love more than street festivals, apparently, are festivals celebrating the street. Witness Atlanta Streets Alive. Inspired by Bogotá, Colombia's ciclovías, this year's affair - the sixth such event - closed off vehicular traffic along five miles of North Highland Avenue between Virginia-Highland and Old Fourth Ward and transformed asphalt into an adult playground of human-powered amusement. An estimated 13,000 people flocked to the streets for bike riding, belly dancing, bicycle polo, and street hockey competitions - but without all those lackluster art tents or people stuffing their faces with funnel cakes you'll find at other outdoor happenings. Things are likely to improve: October's event is scheduled to use the same route and incorporate the newly completed Atlanta Beltline's Eastside Trail, forming a loop shape.
