Best Public Institution to Cheat Death

Grady Memorial Hospital

Staff Pick

Hobbled by a lack of public support, atrocious leadership and a clientele unable to keep up with exploding health-care costs, the region’s top trauma hospital and biggest resource for indigent care nearly went code blue last winter. With priests practically performing last rites, a coalition of local political and business leaders swooped in, turning the hospital into a private nonprofit with the hope that a new administrative structure will make it easier for GRADY MEMORIAL HOSPITAL to get money from the state and charitable foundations. Critics say the new Grady will deliver fewer services to the city’s poor, but fewer services are better than none at all.
