As far reaching as Martin Luther King Jr.'s teachings were, his spiritual birthplace and home was in Atlanta along Auburn Avenue. The federally run historic site now boasts a renovated Ebenezer Baptist Church, including the original pulpit where King and his father both preached. Walk through the doors and you'll hear his voice piped in across the vacant pews. It's spine-tingling. Across the street is a modern, interactive display that takes you through the Civil Rights movement with recorded speeches, documentaries, photos and chilling details. An eternal flame burns across from King's tomb, which is housed near the separate King Center for Nonviolent Social Change.
