Best Off-the-Beaten-Path Tourist Destination

Michael C. Carlos Museum

Staff Pick

Because of its convention business, Atlanta has ample tourist attractions. The downtown museums are fine, and so are Zoo Atlanta and the Atlanta Botanical Garden. But to escape the crowds and see the city’s best collection of ancient goodies, we go to the MICHAEL C. CARLOS MUSEUM. Tucked away under a canopy of trees on the Emory University campus, the facility is known for its Egyptian and Nubian collection, which includes the oldest mummy in the Americas. Designed by famed postmodernist Michael Graves, it’s small and cozy, with artifacts and interesting stories tucked around every corner. In November, the Carlos will host the museum event of the year in Atlanta – Tutankhamun: The Golden King and the Great Pharaohs – at the Atlanta Civic Center. That’s King Tut to you.
