Best Local overall music act

Staff Pick

Over the past year, ZOROASTER has become as mammoth a metal band as that other iconic act, the one that put Atlanta on the metal map. Like Mastodon before them, Zoroaster is more than mere head-banging and tattooed necks — and the majors have caught on. By making the jump from its self-run Terminal Doom label to E1 Music, where the band's labelmates range from Ringo Starr to RZA, Zoroaster is poised for mainstream success, and deservedly so. The key to Zoroaster's ascent has been a relentless tour schedule that carried them throughout the U.S. and abroad. Not only did it raise their profile, it brought artistic direction to their long, hypnotic bouts of buzz-saw drone and god-hammer rhythms. Matador, Zoroaster's E1 debut, boils the group's sludgy, Southern metal origins down to precise, pop-like song structures. The result: an album that's all killer and no filler.
