Jeffrey Bützer

Staff Pick

JEFFREY BÜTZER plays a piano to cinematic affect. His latest CD, The Garden of Scissors, is loaded with nods to Tom Waits, Ennio Morricone and Yann Tiersen via elegant melodies and a soft boom and chang that creates fluttering narrative movements. While his compositions often balance brittle, avant-garde tunes with sweeping, abstract narratives, he never loses sight of the song. He lets the instrument’s natural tendencies inform the mood as much as the music he hears in his head, giving rise to imaginative, astute works that are as fanciful or as far-out as you like them.
