Best Local Acoustic Act

Hubcap City

Crawling from the tragic wreckage of the Jody Grind comes this delightfully bizarre performance art combo led by guitarist Bill Taft. A poker-faced local music icon who also was a key unsung member of the now-legendary Smoke, Taft wraps himself in ribbons of silver duct tape and perches onstage in a rickety chair, snarling out his own sprawling, twisted Southern gothic ballads while percussionist Will Fratesi hammers wildly on an assortment of mechanical odds and ends stashed inside a battered brown suitcase. Somehow, this creative chaos manages to suggest an unlikely collaboration between Hank Williams, Flannery O'Connor and the B-52's.
