In a city where mediocre rappers regularly bum-rush less-than-stellar open-mic nights, pinpointing the best live hip-hop act is a little like finding a rapper in a haystack. But Alabama native YELAWOLF rose the perform-ance bar to a new level this year. From Drunken Unicorn to Smith’s Olde Bar, he’s comfortable rocking for any crowd. Whether he’s swinging from the lights like a rock star at a Fuggin’ Awesome show held peri-odically at the Drunken Unicorn, performing while his DJ rotates between scratching and playing the drums, or bringing half-drunk chicks onstage to dance alongside him during his favorite ditty, “Gone,” Yela always leaves folks with something to buzz about the next day. His MC skills and genre-bending music only magnify his magnetic stage pres-ence. www.myspace.com/yelawolf.
