Best hometown Internet sensation

Staff Pick

Following in the footsteps of such Atlanta-based cyber-heroes as MailChimp and Regator, the eight-month-old SCOUTMOB has already become a must-have app on local smart phones. Since its January launch, the whip-smart start-up operating out of Castleberry Hill has attracted thousands of local subscribers and spread to 13 other cities, including San Francisco, Austin and New York. The gist: Scoutmob sends users a daily e-mail or text featuring a new half-off deal at some of the city's best restaurants, hair salons or specialty stores, while its iPhone app alerts users to nearby deals. Unlike other Web-based discount services, you don't pay in advance — just use your smart phone when you're ready to cash in. With eye-catching design, sharp writing and a smart sense for what folks want, Scoutmob's been a blessing for our lives — and our wallets.
