Best excuse to spend a few days out of the office

Snowpocalypse

Staff Pick

No longer will we poke fun at folks who bum-rush grocery stores when flurries appear. On Jan. 9, nearly four inches of snow blanketed metro Atlanta, creating the quickly named Snowpocalypse. For a day or so, it was awesome. Sci-fi nerds staged mock Star Wars ice battles in their front yards (Hothlanta, y'all), skiers slalomed down Piedmont Park's hills and one guy even ice-skated along Peachtree Street. But the novelty wore off as cold reality set in. Sleet and arctic temperatures left thick sheets of ice on streets, grocery store shelves were emptied, the airport closed and the city was paralyzed for a week. And yet, Atlantans are arguably stronger for the experience: hardier, better able to withstand Mother Nature's wrath — plus, we've got some great stories to tell the next generation of weather wimps.
