Best Emerging Visual Artist

Cullen Washington Jr.

Staff Pick

The first time we saw CULLEN WASHINGTON JR.'s work, we thought, “Where have you been all our life?” It was in an unassuming corner at the Hammonds House fundraising auction, and we couldn't believe it hadn't already been snapped up. Washington's assemblages and paintings mix metaphors as deftly as they mix media, from paint to shoestrings to dirt, sack cloth and gold leaf. The man knows his materials. He confirmed his talent at a Rialto Arts Center show earlier this year, where he once again mixed high and low elements into mystic altars of subdued sociological spirituality.
