El Bar

Staff Pick

Somewhere along the way, megaclubs learned to cater to exhibitionists at the expense of those seeking shadowy dance floors to shed their inhibitions. Thankfully, DJ Rob Wonder created the perfect escape in EL BAR. Tucked away behind El Azteca on Ponce de Leon Avenue, without flashing neon lights or even signage, it remains invisible to the velvet-rope crowd. The DJs – including Presto, Cristo, Steve Deniro, Rasta Root and Rob Wonder himself – play the kind of mixes (from old-school rap to new-school rock) that are dedicated to the art of moving butts Thursday through Saturday. Diverse crowds slink in well past midnight and turn the intimate dance floor into scoops of melting Neapolitan ice cream. But it’s not like it’s a mission statement; nothing feels forced at one of At-lanta’s best-kept secrets.
