OK, so it's not the same without the inimitable Miss Helen taking tickets (and refusing to take any flack) at the door, but the VARIETY PLAYHOUSE
still has plenty to recommend it. The L5P institution continues to attract an eclectic mix of touring rock acts (the first two weeks in September saw performances by Wishbone Ash, Mogwai, Yo La Tengo and Jay Farrar). Their beer prices won't break the bank; the sound, while inconsistent, maintains a B-average overall; and the place has the best sightlines of any club in Atlanta. That's right, club
-- we'd argue that the Variety experience is too cozy to qualify in the small-theater category.
