Best Change-of-Pace Performance

As an Emory theater professor and member of the Georgia Shakespeare Festival's ensemble, JOHN AMMERMAN frequently plays classic roles in a very proper manner. Which made his about-face turn in Theatre Gael's Rat in the Skull such an eye-opener. Ammerman erupted with a seething, verbal profane performance as a Northern Irish policeman in London to interrogate an IRA bomber, whom he despises even more than the English. Reminiscent of Ben Kingsley's feral intensity in Sexy Beast, Ammerman's work suggested that he should opt for David Mamet and Martin McDonagh more than Shakespeare, and keep walking on the wild side.
