Jekyll Island

Staff Pick

J.P. Morgan, William Rockefeller, Joseph Pulitzer and Cornelius Vanderbilt were onto something when, inspired by the “splendid isolation,” they snatched up Georgia’s JEKYLL ISLAND for their own personal hunting resort. More than 100 years later, a few of the founding barons’ not-so-subtle summer homes still stand in a state of beautiful decay, while new development on Jekyll, located about an hour south of Savannah, has sprung up around them. That growth has sometimes been at odds with the splendid isolation for which Jekyll prides itself. State law dictates that only 35 percent of the 17-square-mile island can be developed. What to do with the 108 remaining developable acres, however, has been the focus of much debate. Efforts to keep condos and time shares in check, including the work this past legislative session of state Sen. Jeff Chapman, has helped preserve the integrity of the most popular beach on Jekyll – at least for now. www.jekyllisland.com.
