When: Fri., Oct. 5, 8:30 p.m. 2012
Channeling the spirit of Fela Kuti's insurrectionary Afrobeat - a staccato blend of African rhythms, funk, jazz, and highlife - Brooklyn's Antibalas returns in support of its latest self-titled album (Daptone). It's the ensemble's first in four years, and a welcome return after many of its members spent the last few years touring with the Broadway musical Fela! Led by baritone sax man/founder Martin Perna, Antibalas pushes Afrobeat into the 21st century, fleshing out melodies and polyrhythms so complex that such songs as "Dirty Money," "The Ratcatcher," and "Ari Degbe" reveal seemingly new hooks and nuances with each repeated listen. But there's no way to capture the fiery energy of the group's live presence on record. This show is not to be missed. Georgia Soul Council opens.
